Valeriana is a rhizomatous perennial forming a clump of scented leaves, the basal ones simple, those on the stems pinnate, all opening a sharp lime yellow in spring, becoming pale green by summer; sprays of small white flowers open in early summer.

 

Plant in any well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. Makes a lovely foil foreground or underplanting for tulips contrasted with reds or purples or harmonised with yellows or whites.

Width: 10-50cm
