D. cespitosa var. vivipara is a dense, tussock-forming, evergreen to semi-evergreen grass with rigid, leathery, linear, mid-green leaves and, in summer, erect stems bearing airy, arching panicles of silvery, purple flower spikelets aging pale golden-brown. Rather than seed, flowers are followed by young plantlets that droop to the ground and may take root.

Grow in well-drained to moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil in full sun or light shade. Prefers acid conditions. May be deciduous in the coldest areas of its growing range.

Prune back old stems to the ground in early spring before new growth resumes.
